There’s a garden where Jesus is waiting,

There’s a place that is wondrously fair,

For it glows with the light of His presence’

Tis the beautiful garden of prayer.

Oh, the beautiful garden, the garden of prayer!

 Oh, the beautiful garden of prayer!

There my Savior awaits, and He opens the gates

To the beautiful garden of prayer.

There’s a garden where Jesus is waiting,

And I go with my burden and care,

Just to learn from His lips words of comfort

In the beautiful garden of prayer.

There’s a garden where Jesus is waiting,

 And He bids you to come, meet Him there;

Just to bow and receive a new blessing

In the beautiful garden of prayer.

This hymn was written by Eleanor Allen Schroll around 1920 (1878-1966). She is known for writing many hymns, as well as being a school teacher in Newport, Kentucky, her birthplace. In 1906 she married Henry Clay Schroll who became assistant cashier of a bank in Newport. She belonged to the Grace Methodist Church in the 1940s when O.W. Robinson was the minister. The music was composed by a well-known music publisher, James Henry Fillmore from Cincinnati, Ohio (1849-1936). Upon his father’s death he began supporting the family at age 16 by running his father’s singing school. This hymn is one of several of his accomplishments. Scripture tells we can give Him all our worries and cares (I Peter 5:7). “Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be known to God; and the peace of God which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:6-7). Note the scripture says, “by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving”. Gratitude toward God should accompany all true prayer. Let us never forget to have a thankful attitude. And while we can pray anywhere, a beautiful garden setting seems like the perfect spot to communicate with our creator.
